Chapter 9

The weekend with Deme had been perfect. They woke the next morning early, each with typical morning wood and they got off just rubbing themselves together, then they snuggled more and fell back to sleep. When they woke the second time, it was all about food. Gavin took Deme to one of his favorite breakfast joints, a little mom and pop cafe that always served the fluffiest eggs.

After breakfast, which they ate closer to lunch time, Deme had to go. He had an afternoon class and then some other dance thing he had to do. Though Gavin was reluctant to part, he still got to hold Deme's hand as he walked him back to his apartment and he got a goodbye kiss that was long and passionate and made him hard all over again.

He practically flew home on his own private happy-cloud after that. He thought he could live on that feeling until he was stopped in the doorway by his mother.

"Where've you been?" she scowled.

"Uh..."

Then she laughed a little, her features softening. "Okay. So, it looks like it's getting serious. You going to tell me now? Or do I lecture you about staying out all weekend without calling me and letting me know you're alive?"

Gavin felt a little guilty about making his mother worry, but he was too ecstatic about his new relationship with Deme to linger on it. "Yeah, okay."

She hauled him into the living room, and Gavin plopped down on the leather sofa. His mom didn't say anything. She sat in the matching leather club chair, crossed her legs, and eyed him with her lawyer face. No wonder she was successful. That face would be great for interrogating suspects, though that wasn't the kind of work she really did.

Gavin took a long breath. He had to tell her something. "His name is Deme. Well, that's his short name. I don't remember the long version. It's Ukraine or something like that, I think. And he's a dancer."

"Dancer? What kind of dancer?" she asked, her face still a mask.

"Ballet and modern. He's, uh, he's my partner on the project."

"Oh." Her face lit up like she'd discovered some new brief or other lawyer thing. Her hair was down for once, loosely falling across her forehead. She colored it, making it darker than Gavin's own golden brown that would really be the same color as hers if she didn't dye it. They shared the same thin strands that seemed to float around his head, though most of the time his mom had hers pulled back in a bun or ponytail.

"Oh what?" Gavin shoved his hands under his thighs to keep from fidgeting.

She giggled. "When you said dancer, I thought—Oh, I don't know. Never mind." She cleared her throat. "I kind of like that idea. A dancer might be good for you. Is he cute?"

"No. He's beautiful. Amazing."

His mom hid her smile behind her hand.

"Mom..."

"Sorry," she said, putting her hands back in her lap and lacing them together. "You seem like you're really in love, Gavin.
